Free full text articles. Excellent resource.  'FindArticles is a specialized search engine designed to help you quickly and  easily find published articles on the topics that interest you. Our database has  hundreds of thousands of articles from more than 300 magazines and journals, dating back to 1998. FindArticles even brings some print-only publications to the Web for the first time.'

Sociological Research Online
Free full text research articles available going back to 1996. Sociological Research Online publishes high quality applied sociology, focusing on theoretical, empirical and methodological discussions which engage with current political, cultural and intellectual topics and debates.

NYPL Electronic Resources Listing-Link to Proquest
ProQuest Direct  is available with a valid NYPL (New York Public Library ) card. UMI ProQuest Digital Dissertations provides Web access to UMI's Dissertation Abstracts database. While only institutional subscribers have access to the entire database, you do have free 'guest' access privileges that allow you to search citations and abstracts for all titles in 1999 and 2000. It provides the full text of more than 1,400 general and business periodicals and newspapers and provides indexes and abstracts to more than 3,300 titles.

Electric Library
A general database designed to help students of all ages to do research. Contains articles from magazines, newspapers and books, as well as pictures, maps, and TV and Radio transcripts.

FACTS.com
FACTS.com brings together content from seven core reference databases to answer questions about events, issues, statistics and people of the last 20 years, and on "Historic Events" of the past 60 years.

Biography Resource Center
The Biography Resource Center from Gale is a database of biographical information on more than 150,000 people from throughout history, around the world, and across all disciplines and subject areas.

Literature Resource Center
The Literature Resource Center on GaleNet is a complete literature reference database. It contains information on literary figures from all time periods writing in such genres as fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, history, journalism, and more.

CATNYP Cat of NYPL
Contains the New York Public Libraries' cataloging since 1972, as well as earlier titles added to CATNYP as part of ongoing recataloging projects.

Infortrieve
This site provides ordering access to millions of research articles. Infotrieve is a service that can obtain a wide variety of full text documents from publications around the world. They claim 'With the ultra-efficient, user-friendly Virtual Library, the customer can delve into the Infotrieve research portal, a pay-per-article, full-service document delivery system covering 98% of the world's peer reviewed scientific literature.'; However, the cost is high, at least $10 per article. They do have a wide purview and they claim a high fulfilment rate. However, the site serves best in its capacity to search Medline (see separate entry).

MEDLINE Search - HealthWorld Online
National Library of Medicine's MedLine
Good reference on subjects, although technical and requires some previous knowledge of subjects. Excellent source of professional data; used by doctors, researchers and scholars.  Many different areas of medicine, as well as some psychology. However, coverage is not strictly medical, and many social issues are explored including those pertaining to medicine, biology, sociology, psychology, demography, politics and so on, human and non-human subjects in tests. Good search facility. Abstracts only, but still quite descriptive and complete.  Has access to thousands of articles going back 30 years; however, abstracts are available apparently only for last 10 years. PsychOnline
Gateway to Psychology journals.  Billed as 'Your Guide to Psychological and Social Science Journals on the Web...One of the most comprehensive and up-to-date index of psychology and social science journals on the web.', this site contains links to numerous journals online sites. Some sites offer full text articles for free, others only abstracts, others only a general description of the journal itslef.

J of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law
Free abstracts to journal articles going back to 1986. Basic findings on where psychiatry and the law intersent on the issues of Violence, Criminal responsibility, Competence, civil and criminal,  Child custody and visitation, Psychic injury,  Mental disability, Malpractice, Confidentiality, Involuntary treatment, Correctional psychiatry, Juvenile justice, Ethics and human rights.

National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University
Numerous free full text, book length studies on the subject of drug and alcohol abuse. Highly interesting and relevant subject matter.  The sites states: 'A unique think/action tank that engages all disciplines to study every form of substance abuse as it affects our society. Inform Americans of the economic and social costs of substance abuse and its impact on their lives. Assess what works in prevention, treatment, and law enforcement. Encourage every individual and institution to take responsibility to combat substance abuse and addiction. Provide those on the front lines with the tools they need to succeed. Remove the stigma of abuse and replace shame and despair with hope.'
